Client Stories

Bad things happen. They happen to all of us. Sometimes the difference between devastating loss, and a life filled with accomplishment and simple pleasures comes down to insurance benefits. Helping someone get the benefits they deserve isn’t just about justice, it’s giving our clients a chance to live life to the fullest. We've had the good fortune to represent many deserving people. Here are some of their stories:

Paralyzed Accident Victim Denied Benefits

Our client was a 21-year old who got drunk and ran into a tree while driving his aunt's car.  The accident paralyzed him from the waist down.  The insurance company denied coverage claiming that my client had taken the car illegally, thereby excluding him from coverage.  Because he was uninsured, the hospital minimized his care and actually put him in a dark room with other patients who were on life support.  It is difficult to imagine how dismal that must have been for our client, who was perfectly conscious and trying to cope with the fact that he could no longer use his legs.  We were able to get coverage for our client, enabling him to get a wide range of treatment and therapy.  He persevered, enduring many surgeries and overcoming a multitude of setbacks, Our client is now a teacher at a community college in Florida, married and living a productive life.  At times, our client has suggested that we saved his life, but the truth is that we merely got him the opportunity, and he then did all the work.

Second Wife is Told She is Not the Surviving Spouse

Our client's husband had been married to his first wife for 20 years before he got a divorce.  Shortly thereafter, he went to Japan, met my client, brought her back to Michigan, and married her.  They were married for 27 years before he died. Nevertheless, our client still endured discrimination and rumors that she was really a "bought" bride or a trophy wife.  Her husband had worked for a large corporation for his entire life, and his retirement benefits were substantial.  The divorce decree gave the first wife the portion of his retirement that was earned during the first marriage, but the first wife claimed that a clause in one of the divorce papers gave her the entire retirement benefit, cutting our client out, and the corporation agreed.  We were able to get our client's benefit restored, and along with it, a bit of dignity, too.

Engineer's Severe Depression Wasn't Considered a Disability

Our client was a high-level engineer in the automotive field.  After many years of devoted work, he became totally disabled due to very severe depression.  According to the World Health Organization, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Unfortunately, it is also subjected to a great deal of social stigma, including in the legal world.  After a long battle, we were able to help our client get Social Security Disability benefits and reach a settlement of his long term disability claim.  This changed his life, enabling him to reintegrate himself with his family and his community.
